Crissy Field is the most famous spot in the San Francisco Bay area. Amazing winds rip through just under the Golden Gate Bridge. This place is not for beginners. The winds are a bit unpredictable, with a definite wind line further out past the bridge end. All kinds of boat traffic comes through here, including ships and barges. Fun sailing for the advanced out toward the ships, not advised for intermediate or beginner though.
Crissy Field, an unexpected spot located only 10 minutes from Fisherman's Wharf. Here you surf the San Francisco Bay between Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, and the daring surfers even surf below the Golden Gate Bridge. The special location comes with a load of hazards: - sharks (seals in the bay attract sharks during the summer-months) - big ships (tankers, yachts, tourships) - freezing water! - strong currents! You might have heard the stories about how impossible it was to escape from Alcatraz because you have to swim to the shore... well, now imagine what happens to you when you sink your board..... The Golden Gate Bridge acts as a windtunnel so the wind there is especially strong and gusty.
Access to the water is a sand beach with a huge parking lot, but there are no bathrooms.
No waves, no chicks, just windsurfing. Bring you 5mm swimsuit, a raceboard, and 4.0 to 5.0 sails.
Best season for this spot is from April till October. Wind is thermal so the spot usually gets busy after noon. Water is flat with some ripples
